Holidaze: How about adequate body armor?

Holidays bring big papers, no news -- and really dopey story ideas from editors desperate to fill the newspaper. But, hey: 'Tis the season, right? (Note: This may be the most egregious one yet!)
  • Newspaper: The Indianapolis Star
  • Headline: Soldiers off to war list their wishes
  • The lede: "The Indiana Guard's 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team soon will go to Iraq. We asked several soldiers what they want for Christmas, how this holiday might be different from past Christmases and what they wish for their families."
  • Mitigating Factor: The Star didn't ask the soldiers how they want their tombstones to read.

Was it the assignment to spend New Year's Eve with a lonely security guard -- and live-blog the experience? Use this link to e-mail your worst holiday story assignments. See Tipsters Anonymous Policy in the sidebar, upper right. Or leave a note in the comments section, below.
