Commentz Korner: Cincy's Borgman retreats

Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Jim Borgman has given up blogging -- at least until after the New Year -- because he can no longer stomach the unmoderated comments on his Cincinnati Enquirer BorgBlog.

In a post on Friday, he wrote: "The Comments section of this blog has become a crack house of vitriole, a dangerous dark alleyway where angels fear to tread, and who can blame them? Anonymity provides cover for some people to air their darkest side, to attack randomly and venomously. It's something I don't want to be associated with anymore. I've come to feel the guilt of a slumlord, a kind of complicity in providing a barely monitored space where unaccountable voices brawl and slash."

(Thanks to a Gannett Blog reader for the tip!)

Got an offensive or just-plain-crazy comment that made it past your Gannett site's filters? Use this link to e-mail suggestions. See Tipsters Anonymous Policy in the sidebar, upper right. Or leave a note in the comments section, below. (I read and approve all comments before they get published!)

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
