Half-baked ideas: Why my cooking show soured

E.W. Scripps outperformed many newspaper stocks in recent years because the Rocky Mountain News publisher invested smartly in cable TV -- including the very popular Food Network. But it turns out that producing the Cookin' With Jim Show was a tough nut to crack.

I was holding The Dairy Hollow House Cookbook at the start of this episode. I bought a copy at that famous Ozarks bed-and-breakfast when I lived in Arkansas, from 1985-91.

  3. From the looks at those digs, looks like Jim would have been better served looking at Scripps other cable product HGTV and not the Food Channel. I still can't ge over the naked pipes in the ceiling, and can't figure why they would plumb a building like that. Is it a sprinkler system?

  6. I liked it. Jim, you're funny!

I think those pipes you see were put up just to hang the clothes we saw in earlier episodes.

  7. You are the cutest! And this coming from a married hetero woman. Sparky is a lucky guy for sure.

  8. Forget cat food. That's for people who can afford to, like, buy stuff.

For all of us, unemployed Gannett hacks and soon-to-be-unemployed Gannett hacks alike, what we really need is a cooking show showing clever, inexpensive ways of cooking cats themselves.

They're the ideal Depression food. Even feral kitties are accustomed enough to humans that they're pretty easy to sneak up on and shoot. It's not like stalking a deer or something.

Not a lot of meat on your average cat, but hey, it's FREE FOOD, dude!
