Watch this date: Oct. 17
That's when Gannett says it will report its third-quarter earnings. Don't you suppose CEO Craig Dubow might announce a big restructuring -- possibly with buyouts/layoffs/asset sales -- on or by that date to soften the blow of another poor quarter? After all, that's how distressed public companies answer Wall Street criticism about falling revenue and profits. Plus, it would help explain the timing of Dubow's warning to employees this week: Maybe he's telling everyone to expect something to happen in the next four weeks.
