  4. Its all business...nothing more, and nothing less. It hurts and it sucks. Act accordingly. Loyalty is only in your mind.

  6. From what's going around the office, Lafayette (La.) has initiated its six layoffs. They haven't released any names, but I know one was a new "parajournalist" in the newsroom, another was in advertising and a third in marketing.

The one in marketing was an interesting story, if it's true. Apparently, they laid someone else off, and this person who's been here 15 years offered to take the bullet instead, because the original person laid off had kids at home.

Gannett could learn a lot from that person's act of kindness and compassion.

So, we should expect an e-mail from our corporate suits any day now saying they're all taking a voluntary pay cut to do their part in helping in this time of economic distress. Right?

  7. Jim, apparently one blogger at Greenville (S.C.) News (http://greenvilleonline.com) took it upon himself to blog the news of layoffs there since there was no news of it in the newspaper. What makes it funny is that apparently twice was the blog entry deleted. I've checked on the site and the third iteration of the blog remains on the site. I just find it interesting that TGN would censor a blogger on its site on economic news while they continue to have blogs on anti-gay bashers, Christastic naysayers and Confederate apologists without a blink.

Sometimes hypocrisy rules in the face of reason.

  8. The lede story on CNN's website this afternoon is about the Love Canal scandal 20 years on. Gannett newspapers played a major role in uncovering that shameful situation. Today, Gannett wouldn't allocate the resources for such an investigative undertaking because the beancounters couldn't see a positive ROI. Sad...

  9. 3:28, I believe Bridgewater had 10, HNT 5. Not sure, but I think the 2 you were missing are out on disablity.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
