Detroit layoffs, effective 1/17/14, were announced to affected employees on 11/19/13, (Affected employees: all in Creative Department at the Sterling Heights Operations Facility, and some from downtonw). We know Gannett always wins, even when it comes to permanently altering employees lives. It isn't like most of us didn't know it was coming, but they continue to act in such a cold, nonchalant way; dismissing us with not so much as a wince. They always choose to do their dismissing just before the holidays. I'm not sure why, but it has to be their 'trickle up' economic philosophy. May they gag on their gold rings.
And you forget to mention that the soon to be eliminated workers have to train their replacements. Many of the exiting workers are middle aged or older. Between the responsibilities of family and the lack of employment opportunities with their current skills not relevant to other industries, they are being tossed into the Michigan soup of underemployed low income pools with no chance of paying for benefits. All while the 1% clink their wine glasses and give each other high fives. The Dickensian society is alive and well in today's USA.
Well GPS inherited a lot of shit from former big wig Ken Kirkart of UsaToday's advertising operations. He left us with his worthless shit, multiple problems and then he retired. With all of the people who are loosing jobs, that piece of worthless shit got to retire almost a year ago. You should see the scum of the earth that he brought with him during the integration. I wish they would fire every single person that was part of Kirkart's ugly crew.
Has any other site had Picasso and it's 4 pillars rolled out to employees, aside from the APP? Does this mean Content Evolution is on the scrap heap next to News 2000, the First Five Graphs, Real Life, Real News, and Passion Topics? Has your management promised this isn't a flavor of the month (like Content Evolution also wasn't a flavor of the month?) Do they ever learn?
Yes, Turkey, three other sites. Picasso is apparently the most recent attempt to "engage readers" with passion topic-type focuses, but it seems to be a very limited experiment. Still not sure how it will be judged as a success or failure, either.
Rumor has it the building at the Journal and Courier in Lafayette, IN has been sold. I wonder where they will move the remaining skelton staff and if they will keep the advertising and newsroom folks together or split them up?
Circulation will be moving to The Production Center, the rest, no clue, but I will tell you they do not need much room to staff what little amount of folks remaining..its the start of The Indy Stars Lafayette version.
And here's how Appleton is paying for the paper ;and ink they're using for the Butterfly Project.
We are implementing a market-based pricing model. We are the first in Wisconsin to use this pricing model. Most major publishing companies already utilize this approach and the concept is similar to what cable has done for years. Most seven-day subscribers will still pay a little less than a dollar a day to have our news and advertising delivered to them at home and on their device of choice. This price increase will not affect employee subscriptions or digital subscriptions.
Unlike the last time we had a price increase when everyone was informed all at once, this time notices will be mailed weekly based on when expiration dates come due. The first batch of subscribers will be notified on November 27.
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

ReplyDeleteUrgh, typo: should be downtown not 'downtonw.'

ReplyDeleteSome people who get paid to write will never learn to spell possessive pronouns.
DeleteNothing like dodging the question and issue with going off topic. Bet you are a manager.

ReplyDeletePeople who give Jim money are wasting it. There are lots of charitable efforts that need support. Educate yourselves.

DeleteTwo of the Central Wisconsin papers have been moved into storefronts as their operations diminished.
DeleteCan't wait to see my operation wedged between a Curves Weight Loss and Baskin-Robbins at the mall - the other 'three pillars'.

Yeah, model yourself after cable TV rates. 45 pages and nothing on.....
DeleteFYI ... that would be from an e-mail from the publisher.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm. Another short-term revenue gain from a price increase.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure why Gannett just doesn't pull the plug on the print versions...everyone knows that is what they want to do.
