Our property seems to be moving toward becoming a semi-weekly or Sunday-only publication. Some of the indications are certain reporters deemed "investigative journalists" that are being salvaged. Has anyone else seen any indicators of this at their properties?
getting ready fro the disaster that will be Thanksgiving papers at Florida Today. Creative accounting leading the way for too high draws, huge papers still put into bundles of 8 instead of 5's or maybe even 4's. Add to that carriers also handling Orlando sentinels which will not be delivered early so the early loading carriers will have to sit around and wait. Also the New York delivered papers also are not arriving early to cause more delays.
I understand the need to gobble (pun intended) up more revenue but it was done with no thought as to the extra burden loaded upon the single copy people. Or if there was thought there was no caring.
Maybe there'll be a miracle in Brevard but I doubt it. FT has been progressively ruining Thanksgiving for it's carriers for years now. Why should this year be any different!
at FT the press came up and actually ran smooth. Even through insertion the huge, 40 lb. plus bundles came out fairly OK, though most came tumbling down the belts into the vehicles or rolling onto the ground.
Most carriers had their FT's by 11pm which was great. The Orlando however got here at 11:30, then had to off load, get to the carriers, then get inserted (4 preloads), then loaded into their vehicles.
One carrier had their Fla's at 10:30 but still didn't leave until 1.
I understand the money grab for the deliveries but they should have either kept the Orlando carriers for their paper or hired others. It's too much for S/C carriers to deliver both.
My Gannett Retiree health insurance premiums go DOWN by $57 a month starting next year (I got in at age 55, I'm 58 now). Did anyone else experience this?
Same with me mine went down by $57 a month also. That is because for single retiree the deductible went from $500 to $1500, The plan basically does not pay for anything until you reach the $1500 deductible, Check the NYS affordable care act. You may find a better deal!
That is true, but now you have to pay all of your out of pocket untill you reach the $1500 deductible. Once that is met then you can submit items for 80/20 payment.
Broadsheet, Berliner, tabloid, pony or quarterfold - most presses can produce more than one size product with a change of paper width, slitter blades, folders and trimmers, both online and offline. In addition, with the design studios handling the work for multiple sites, it's incredibly easy to pick up the basic templates from one configuration and adjust for a new site.
I am not a Gannett employee but I was reading USA today and got to wondering. Does it make money or is subsidized somehow. I know they raised the subscription price but I have never paid for a USA Today in my life. I get them free at the desk of my hotel. And advertising is sparse. It is hard for em to imagine they turn a profit but I could be wrong. Does anyone have an anonymous, definitive answer?
The sites that print USA Today do not make money printing it. Corporate reimburses them for the consumables they use. The profit from selling the paper is almost break even. The money they receive from advertisers is spread out, so profits are also minimal. The paper you receive at the hotel is part of a contract that Gannett has bartered. If you noticed that the hotel label is no longer on the paper, that was part of a restructured deal. Hope this helped.
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

ReplyDeleteThe number of daily publications across North America and the developed world will decline precipitously.

All in all however it could have been much worse.
