Gannett is making its presence felt at the former Belo stations: KGW in Portland is selling its news helicopter and will now share a chopper with another station across town.

  3. Oh, the cuts are coming. Helicopters are horrendously expensive to operate anyway. Whatever Gannett can cut or do without, they will - that's for sure. So, this is what you've got to look forward to Belo! Isn't it so awesome to work for a company like The Big Shiny! Have fun!

  11. I would love to know if those papers that have been running Butterfly for a few months now have seen their circulation and ad revenue go up because that's what the stated goal was by a NE Wis boss

    1. I suspect it hasn't helped or you would have heard. I think NE Wis went down with the Packers and temperatures.

  13. newspapers will no longer be a huge monet maker as time goes on, but they will still make money if the Brass put local news in the paper instead of this garbage USAT section. In Indiana, The Star will become the state paper, with a Lafayette, Muncie and Richmond local section, thus they will eliminate more jobs and most likely shut down the Lafayette Printing plant, It is in the works, more info later with facts to back it up

    1. Is it an either/or proposition? Newspapers already put AP, NYT, McClatchy, Reuters, Dow Jones, etc. in their pages, and yet they still also include local news in their pages. Will it be any different using USAT for national stories instead of AP?

    2. We've heard this for weeks, with never a fact to back any of it up. Either provide facts or stop spreading the same rumor.

    4. 9:09AM- true statement indeed!

    5. That makes no sense. Using your logic, I could say that if you work for Gannett, your balls will drop off, and that would not be a rumor.

    6. If you work for Gannett, you will have a pair and find a new job, or continue to post rumors on this web site....
So my balls are intact and the Gannett pressure is off for ever, My balls are intact and living life GCI free

    1. USA Today ain't the only one. ESPN has a corporate policy of taking credit for stories that originate elsewhere.

    2. David Callaway: "Mr. Bateman’s map was an inspiration for an effort that fell short of our newsroom publishing standards. As soon as we realized our oversight, we took immediate action to correct our mistake. We apologized to Mr. Bateman and are addressing the situation both internally and externally to give the artist the credit he deserves and to set the record straight for our readers. We do not take these incidents lightly."

      Blatant plagiarism is an "oversight"?

    3. That's correct. Just this morning, ESPN took credit for the sun rising and the air we breathe.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
