Louisville | Press fire delays delivery for 105K

The incident started around 9:30 last night when a folder caught fire, cutting power to one of three presses and melting an optic line at the Kentucky daily.

In a note to readers, The Courier-Journal said delivery for 105,000 homes would be delayed until later today or tomorrow. In the meantime, the paper made available its electronic edition -- an exact replica of the print version.

“We’re not really sure how the fire started,” production chief Tom Letto told the paper for a story. “We believe it was caused from a spark from one of the bearings.”

Letto said the press didn't suffer “a whole lot of damage."

Nearly two years ago, the press experienced a catastrophic failure on the most important weekend of the year: the day of the Kentucky Derby, preventing printing of the popular post-race edition.

  2. Bearings do not produce sparks. Dirt, filth, and neglect cause fires.

  4. If our press burned to the ground, that means I can collect unemployment, wishful thinking

    1. The condition of the press room is the managements decision. When the shit hits the fan look for somebody else to blame. Next time don't call it a fire just refer to it as a heat source.

    2. Cleaning of the press is an operator issue.

  9. I heard the Wilmington fire was caused by long-haired dopers who run the press.
