'Wait 'til this year was the message New York Times CEO Mark Thompson sent to investors on Thursday after the company posted its 13th straight quarterly decline in ad revenue. "This will be a critical year in the story of advertising at the company," he said.' – AdAge
Hmm. Probably an unwise expectation to set for one's sophomore year job performance, especially when there's little reason to hope it will work out for you.
One in Seattle. That may be the third SF person (reported administratively through the bureau). Surprised it's only seven. No editors, naturally. Supposedly it's part of a digital repositioning, but getting rid of the blogger and a digital person belies that. One is losing his insurance (except for COBRA) a week before a baby is due.
I Lafayette In. The word is shutter the Operation and the entire staff will be riffed, too bad , but it is a sloppy operation and the managers in charge don't have a clue how to run a production plant. So long to the brothers in charge..what a joke
"For lower-quality publishers like Gannett, which has squeezed profits out of its newspapers for decades, the paywall money has been in print, not digital". - yup
So between the Home News and the Courier News, there's only about 600 digital subscribers.... and the APP has an average weekday digital subscription total of fewer than 1,100.
Lafayette LA here /// with Jim closing our avenue to expose what is going on here will make our job to get the truth out harder but we will get it out. There are local and federal agencies out here that will welcome our stories. There are laws out here that will not allow a lot of what is going on to happen. We will not be managed by threats, intimidations, or anything that is not lawful by the queen's army.
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

Any more news on layoffs at USA TODAY. Heard there were 6 people let go so far.
ReplyDeleteI, too, am curious about the layoffs. Are other papers involved? Jim ????
ReplyDeleteMarch 26. Layoffs coming to a newspaper near you.
ReplyDeleteHow do you know that?
DeleteIt doesn't. That's more of the unfounded gossip you thrive on, Jim.
DeletePosters here are often wrong -- but not always. This may or may not be the case with 1:44's prediction.
DeleteStill wait for your big changes coming announcement Jim........
DeleteWhat about USA Today? Were there only six? What positions?
ReplyDeleteFrom what I know, two tech reporters one of them in Money, a travel reporter, and a new hire in NYC who no one knows what her job was exactly.
DeleteThere were six. Three were based in San Franciso; two in New York; one in McLean.
DeleteThe woman in NYC wasn't a new hire, but a PT worker who transferred from McLean. She was on the tech team, as well.

DeleteThe falsity of this comment cannot be disproved.
ReplyDeleteOne was based elsewhere, i know for fact.

ReplyDeleteRubbish. Absent actual market-by-market hard data proving the hypothesis, the author is just pontificating out of his opinionated nether regions.

DeleteIt seems as though the Newseum has got their crap together as far as far as taking a break from annual layoffs.
ReplyDeleteHey Jim, a quick question before you go. On the AAM numbers: The column "Digital nonreplica" is the total number of digital subscribers?
ReplyDeleteI believe that's correct.
DeleteSo between the Home News and the Courier News, there's only about 600 digital subscribers.... and the APP has an average weekday digital subscription total of fewer than 1,100.
DeleteIt's Saturday. What are the big changes?
ReplyDeleteApparently, you missed this.
DeleteThanks for doing this. Here is one ex-Gannettoid who hopes the company and the newspapers and the TV stations survive.
