Jim, best to you from a former Shreveport Times staffer. Thanks to you, we were given a heads up about layoffs, buyouts, and so many other corporate decisions that would speed the demise of the print product that we loved and hasten our departure from a career that we enjoyed. Your efforts were often met with hateful posts, unfounded accusations and general vitriol but let me speak for myself and so many others ... This blog has kept me connected not to a company I now despise but to friends left behind that I care about and gir whom I now pray for as they continue to work in inhumane conditions until the next shoe drops. You will be missed Jim.
Jim, thank you for helping me help my spouse see the light. I will forever be grateful. I hope you enjoy your Gannett free life as much as we're enjoying ours. Thank you again for everything you've done. I don't think you'll ever truly know the impact you've had on so many lives.
March 26th, is the day the Lafayette, Indiana Production Center will shutter, along with several others as Gannett starts to downsize the Community Newspaper group.
Great job Jim. Lets hope gannett crashes and burns in a fireball so bright we are all warmed to the bone. Also ......burn in hell Craig Debow. BAHAHAHA
Thank you for all your hard work and for all the information you provided so that many of us could plan accordingly. We are so grateful. Wishing you much success, happiness, and satisfaction in your next venture. Take care.
Jim, when you came on the scene with this blog, I was somewhat afraid. I didn't know what direction you would take and if you would somewhat wipe out all my research that I have done on Gannett. Their is plenty of info that needs to be given without crossing lines. My relationship with Gannett started as a medical potboiler. Needed money for medical care because of injuries that happen after a criminal attack outside and INSIDE Mansfield Newsjournal. The police gave me the name of the wrong person despite fifteen witness, security camera, the police report disappear.Which I needed to pay for oral surgeon under the money they give for victims of crimes. It was actually a hate crime, the person who attack me kept asking if I was gay, which is what I told the police. I not a homesexual. It because of your life style Jim, I almost never posted on this blog, but professional has no place for personal ideas. At the time I did research on the Horvitz's newspaper empire, was tole by publisher, they like my research but Horvitz's just are not sellable. If I had another sellable writing project they would like to see it> So I contacted publishesr about doing a book on the history of USA TODAY. Could not believe the number of publishers who were interest. So since I need money, and I knew Al and Harry Horivit'z were friends, I called Al's office and told then I was going to do a book on the history of USA TODAY. I didn"t know anything about Al being a control freak. He stole my contacts, Peter used most of my title in his book. Called Andrew,@Parker and told then. They didn't know who I was, but they knew Al, had a fight with him, and force Al, to buy copyright for the book. (name me one book in the history of publishing that the subject bought the copyright of the book 3 months later). Al's office offer to buy me out(Your welcome Jim to see the snail mail on this),I didn"t trust the deal, and turn it down. From an editorial point what I have now is better.Several years later Gannett bought the Newsjournal and then another attacked on the other side happen buy AN EMPLOYEE of NJ. Didn't report it, but when the Steelers were in super bowls, guess who came to a pitch dark house claiming somebody was shooting at him and when to come in while he called police on his cell. (he was giving out wrong address). I kick him and girlfriends, off porch, He went to a neighbor house to wait for police. Somebody did try and shoot me when I was walking out the door a few years ago. Police said it was a twenty-two, neighbor kids were recording music at time and got all four shot.A split second move because it was raining may have save my life. As I said, a few weeks ago, I was thinking about starting up a Gannett's blog. Since your giving up this one that a very good possibly, or re starting this one. Several years ago, after publishing an article about Usa Today I got an interesting offer from a major player in the publishing world. I'll go to see if their still interested in having me on their team,One of the things I going to suggest is to keep this blog alive with me running it and on their dime.(god I need money). I going to wait a few weeks, to see if another Gannett's blog is started, or if you change your mind. I just got information a few days ago, that Jan, is starting a campaign to having certain major properties name after her dad. So their is alot of things that is happening behind the door, that public needs to know. Jim, thank you for keeping my interested alive about Gannett, for giving me a forum, to tell somewhat of what I know(you don't know how much, I wrote and killed because I do have to save some infor for when I ready to publish it) and hope that whatever you do you have as much success as you did with this blog. I am going to suggest that since your well respected among Journalism world, you consider going to a magazine or newspaper, and write the behind the story of this blog. Good luck.
As Gannett is moving more into TV, the company is burnishing its public image by doing newscasts from the Ice Desk. I counted Gannett's stations in Atlanta, Cleveland and Washington DC plus the newly-acquired Belo stations in Charlotte and Norfolk.
The Nashville Scene alternative paper hands it to a very questionable move by The Tennessean's Laura Hollingsworth. You HAVE to read this. http://www.nashvillescene.com/pitw/archives/2014/02/14/tennessean-hires-new-vp-to-run-news-operation
Goodbye Jim and I want to express to you my gratitude for a job well done, I think this blog was a conduit for many employees and former employees to express their frustration with what was once a great company but is no longer. I agree with 8:34 a.m. and hope Craig Dubow chokes on a chicken bone. And his gang of cronies too, including Martore and Dickey, Don't care what anyone may say, but this blog was my lifeline and kept me updated on developments when many of my friends were laid off in December 2008 and sadly, when I was laid off myself in August 2011. Jim, you are a credit to the profession of journalism and I can't thank you enough for all of your efforts on behalf of the people laboring in the trenches of Gannett. They deserve better and I'm happy you are moving on. But a part of me will be sad today for those still working under the deplorable fear of layoffs, furloughs, buyouts and the shady tactics of backroom behind-closed-door management.
Once more, thank you. This blog was helpful to me during the dark days and fear of layoffs, buyouts and furloughs. It was nice to know that I wasn't the only one. I hope you have something really good planned for the future because so many will be missing their visits to the site for updates and reassurance :) So all the very best to you, happiness and health always and gratitude for sticking with it considering it was Gannett you took on and all the vicious comments that were posted.
Visiting this blog has been a part of my daily routine for all these years. It's been an invaluable source of information on the company and I'm sorry to see it go away. Best of luck, Jim, and happy trails to you.
First stumbled upon this blog in spring of 2008 after doing a google search for "Gannett layoffs". Was surprised to find Gannett Blog near the top of the search list, my guess is you must have had some SEO help early on. Anyway, I ventured into Gannett Blog that day and what I found was, in a word, remarkable. Not only the inside information from your fantastic pool of sources, but also this organic base of fellow Gannett employees who were systematically getting hosed and now had a collective place to vent. I understand your mindset about turning the page and moving on, but my hope is that the content here lives a long life on the web after tonight.
Jim, thank you. The immense value of this blog has been immeasurable. Someone else, start a blog. You do not have to do the stellar reporting that Jim did. We need a forum!!
Thanks a Bunch Jim. I was a casualty in 2008 after many years of service. Your blog let me know that I was not alone in what was happening to employees. It also has kept me informed since. Good luck in your next venture!
C'mon, people, this is it! We're down to the wire. Get those final whines recorded for the ages! It's not like any of us have anything better to do on Valentine's Day.
So sorry to see you go. We need something like this blog, but none of us can work forever. There has to be an end. Not sure when mine is but at least I'm fighting till the end. Thanks for all you've done Jim. It's much appreciated.
We could post a comment about how this site memorializes forever the narcissism, pettiness and sheer cluelessness of the journalism profession, but that would be redundant.
Friendly reminder: I will disable commenting at midnight ET today, so this is your last chance!
ReplyDeleteYipes! That should have been midnight Pacific Time, where I live. Many of you East Coasters just gained three more hours to post final comments.

ReplyDeleteRichard: You have been one of my most loyal readers over the years, and I really appreciate that.
DeleteI didn't understand a word of that story. Your a journalist?
DeleteI stopped reading after the third jumbled sentence.
DeleteA lot to chew on there.
