Just noticed that former long-time Gannett executive Frank Vega -- a close associate of the late Al Neuharth -- announced his retirement yesterday as publisher of the Hearst-owned San Francisco Chronicle.
Another former GCI executive also is leaving the Chronicle: Mark Adkins ws named publisher of Hearst's Beaumont (Texas) Enterprise.
An obscure November 2012 Wikileaks email dump points to former White House adviser and now-CIA chief John Brennan as the person behind the “witch hunt” of journalists .
Am told last night was a fustercluck at GPS Louisville. So many pages were shoved through system it choked up. Message came out 'stop! don't do nothing!'. Was after 9:00pm when the pages for the pre-run finally came in. It was to start up by 7:00. They had to make a second press ready to help out. It was under manned and had boo-coo trouble. Oh well, you get what you pay for!
Yeah, a bunch of education policy-speak. Sadly, too, it's from CNBC, one of USAT's "content partners". Probably slapped up on the USAT site without a second look.
The age means nothing, just typical Gannett employees. Head in the sand, Gannett is the only place they can work, low self esteem, always stressed out, always worried about being laid off, yet won't do anything about it mentality.
USAT has at least one person in its newsroom who would have trouble writing a simple sentence in English. That person has the word "editor" in her title.
This is not an attack on that person but rather a fact about a newsroom that has been lowering standards for hiring for at least 10 years.
Regardless or whether you are a reporter, copy editor or someone on the editing fringes, if you're in the newsroom, you should know basic English and probably should have a college education.
How one gets through the hiring process, survives multiple rounds of layoffs, when they might not be able to spell "layoffs," is truly a remarkable indication of what USAT has turned into. USAT recruits and even protects employees for all the wrong reasons. And again, I don't blame those people for applying or staying employed there in the Crystal Palace. I blame USAT management for putting pretty smiles and kissing ass above well educated, well qualified talent.

Frank Vega brought in Ward Bushee, formerly with Gannett in Reno, Cincinnati and Phoenix, as the editor of the Chronicle.
