Hers a comment.. The VP's and directors continue to pull in large salarliers, will us worker bee's have not got a raise in 3 years. This compnay is jacked up. It is time for a major change at the top. Were I work all the staff is looking for new jobs, we have had it with corparate Gannett. E Rvan Ray if you read this, how about giving your front line supervisors a big increase. We deserve it
11:49, the complainers either sleep in on Mondays after watching a full slate of D-list talk shows the night before, or they are at the unemployment office. That cuts down on comments.
Well, well, well! Nice way to place a spin on something. I don't keep stats but no comments before noon spells no interest in my little black book. But whatever you need to tell yourself.
This is what USA TODAY is reduced to running on its home front. Sexist trash about demi-celebs showing skin. http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2013/05/20/kesha-backside-eva-commando-malfunction/2326859/
USAT is no longer in the business of trying to produce credible news products. That is proven in how stories are played, written and edited on a daily basis. News judgment and perspective left the building. So did journalistic values and integrity. The last five years have been a tragic example of throwing the baby out with the bath water. And with the reputation it has created for itself within the industry in the last five years, I don't expect a lot of highly qualified journalists -- young or old -- will be knocking down the door for a job in the Crystal Palace.
Diminishing talent means diminishing readership. USAT shot itself in the foot with its short-sighted thinking in recent years. It will pay the price for a very long time for creating such an unstable environment.
The best business weathered the recession with loyalty and foresight, knowing it would need its workforce once the hard times had passed. Good businesses also knew that reputation -- how it treated employees during the bad times -- would have a direct influence on how recruitment went in the future.
USAT leaders thought of none of this. They ravaged careers, diluted the product and destroyed what credibility had been gained after a rocky start. They turned the paper/website into a shallow mess that could only appeal to equally shallow readers.
Really 7:40 all you do is come on here and pretend like you are better than everyone else. Jim should be proud that all types of people can post comments on here. This is not only for you.
Is it a coincidence that the attorney who approved tracking the Associated Press's phone calls was also involved in hacking David Einhorn's phones eight years ago?
Just to vent on this site and to show you why we are falling deep into a black hole, since sales people have to follow the 5 step sales process..plan and prepare, it sure would help us if management followed the same suit instead of cramming last minute programs that we can't sell due to early deadlines
Gannett has told its employees to use social media to hit people up for money for tornado relief. You only wish they put the same effort into reporting about a government that's out of control.
The only thing "Gannett Cares" about is kissing everybody else's ass.
Come on. 1000's of people are homeless and Charles Everett wants to knock Gannett for trying to encourage people to help out their neighbors in need? You should be ashamed Charlie.
Gannett is not "trying to encourage people" -- it's telling its employees to use their Twitter and Facebook to hit people up for money. That's panhandling.
I'm also cynical about the "Gannett Cares" email employees got yesterday. Here's the email:
"As Oklahoma struggles to recover from the impact of yesterday’s devastating tornado, Gannett will for the first time launch a cross-company campaign called “Gannett Cares.” At Gannett, our purpose is to serve the greater good and today people are in need. Our goal is to harness the power of our 100+ brands and our 31,000 employees to help those impacted by the tornado. Gannett Cares is intended to augment the terrific work already being done by our local media organizations.
As part of this campaign, we would like to encourage employees to use their social networks at approximately 3:50 p.m. (ET) today (to coincide with the time the tornado touched down yesterday) to extend this message:
Text REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10 to #Oklahoma relief. Spread the word. #gannettcares
Together we can make a difference.
Thank you!"
The wording was straight from the corporate marketing boilerplate. It was NOT encouragement to donate or volunteer. It was nothing more than an effort to create something the marketing/social media execs could talk up.
What the absolute fuck?! "Gannett Cares"? Why now? Why not during hurricanes Katrina or Sandy or the Sandy Hook shootings or the countless other manmade or natural disasters?
To all the Gannett honchos reading this, I am totally disgusted by this move. Seriously, I couldn't believe this company could stoop to such a low.
Who in the hell came up with the design for the flag/masthead for the USAT rag? Every time I see it, reminds me of a 2nd grader turned loose with a box of broken crayons. I know that ship has sailed but I still bought a copy today for the Oklahoma City story. Take a look at the Flag, yea real nice guys, real nice.
The Asbury Park Press folded 10 of its 11 sister weeklies effective May 30, 2013. Only the Observer Reporter in Toms River, N.J., will remain. And who knows how much longer that publication will last? It's another great effort by the clowns in the Asbury Park Press advertising department, site of a lounge featuring couches and television sets for employees. I guess with fewer newspapers to sell, the advertising employees will have more time to rest and polish their fingernails while discussing the previous night's television shows. The Asbury Park Press building is for sale. The pile of rubble the building is to become will serve as another monument to the clowns in the advertising department. Some of the weeklies were down to as few as eight pages per week. Disgusting!!!! I knew the weeklies were doomed from the outset as there are numerous family owned mom and pop weeklies operating in Ocean and Monmouth counties. They are loaded with local advertising and snappy local content. They are what newspapers should be. Several inches thick, there is no way they will fall to the Internet.
Remember when the Cincinnati Enquirer misspelled its own name in a Page 1-A label that said "EXQUIRER EXCLUSIVE"?
Today's paper has a big story with new details about the IRS office at the center of the scandal. Story carries this label on the jump: "ENQUIRIER (sic) IN-DEPTH."
I look for Gannett to fold up its Jersey Shore operations within the next year or two. The Asbury Park Press building is for sale. The newspaper has folded the majority of its sister weeklies. The Islander, a weekly newspaper and website that covered from Keyport and Keansburg south to Berkeley Township, died last summer. Buyouts were offered to employees last year. Empty desks are piling up all over the building that is for sale. The newspaper closed its Toms River bureau, ending an Ocean County presence which began in the 1940s. The bureau was closed in February of this year. Several other bureaus have been closed by Gannett. The Press has announced it will seek to lease office space in its new building, site to be announced. It means Gannett will pull out of the Jersey Shore as quickly as it can while stealing the checks and pensions of workers, making it the Enron of the Jersey Shore. Need I say more??????????????!!!!!
11:23 p.m.: It's far from a BS post. And it's not crap. Every word of it is true. You must be either a Gannett corporate stooge or blind _ or both _ to think it's BS. If you are blind, someone must have read it to ya. Truth hurts, eh??!!! Gannett is a communications company. Let the truth be told!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And by the way, in the I Forgot Department: The Asbury Park Press' Community Shopper weeklies are also being folded effective May 30. Another triumph for The Press' advertising department (LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Oops. I forgot this note: Gannett has folded so many aspects of its Jersey Shore operation that I forgot to report this: The company folded at least one edition of its Beacon newspapers. The Beacon newspapers are weeklies that cover from Lacey Township south to the Long Beach Beach Island area.
I hear The Press of Atlantic City will be printed by the Asbury Park Press at its plant in Freehold. I guess that means layoffs in the pressroom of The Press of Atlantic City, recently sold. The newspaper and website were not sold to Gannett. This is interesting, considering I heard the APP was closing its Freehold bureau in a bid to outsource printing.
Look for the East Group to begin closing its beach papers in Delaware and Maryland. They have shrunk in size, they are a nusiance to print and distribute, their low cost ads aren't worth the effort, no one is reading them (Because the competition is so much better). All the focus will be on the digital brands and the News Journal and Salisbury Times. There are no weekly managers at the table making decisions. Those once profitable titles will fade fast.
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
Note: Only a member of this blog may post a comment.
Almost noon and there are no comments on Monday. This is realy a happening place!

DeleteIf you work like you write you don't deserve to supervise anyone, much less deserve a raise.
That's because gannett keeps laying people off.
Delete9:57 is correct. 20,000 have been let go in just over 5 years, there are less worker bees to complain.
DeleteGannett is a company that has no honor.
DeleteComments always drop off during holiday weeks -- and we're now in a two-week stretch of one: Memorial Day.

USAT is an embarrassment to the profession.
Someone on here was looking for the office of distributor for the Desert Sun I think it has been posted as 74804 Joni Dr Suite 4A in Palm Desert.
ReplyDeletePalm Desert? That is an incorrect answer!
DeleteOnce again, we see that people at Gannett Blog cannot handle basic tasks.
9:44 Why is that incorrect?
DeleteSeriously? The name of the city is incorrect.
DeleteJim must be so proud of the people who post here.
Really 7:40 all you do is come on here and pretend like you are better than everyone else.
DeleteJim should be proud that all types of people can post comments on here. This is not only for you.
It's not hard to "pretend to be better" than people who can't look up an address.
DeleteThis isn't the Riddle of the Sphinx, people. Yet it has been going for days.
Why is this so important an issue to you?
DeleteAddress is correct I don't think 9:44 knows what they are talking about.
DeleteIronic that 9:44 is yelling about people not looking up an address when he/she can't be bothered to do the same.
DeleteHere's a hint for you, 9:44: Google maps is *your* friend, too.
Comments in previous thread discussing AP/first amendment issue were deleted. Perhaps Jim can explain.
ReplyDeleteDitto!
DeleteHow about we take a moment to think about the folks killed in Oklahoma during the massive tornado. The rest of our complaints seem silly
