On the eve of Al Neuharth's burial, tomorrow in South Dakota, the former stripper in Rochester, N.Y., who vividly described her encounters with the then-Gannett chief has expressed condolences in her inimitable way.
Today, via e-mail, she sent the following, "Boom-Z is busy arranging her own Pitty Party. She will be in touch the moment she emerges from the Dark Side."
If she real,(I doubt it, their are to many holes in her story to take seriously).Wondering if the gals( Al did two at a time) he kept at a DC hotel, will be their!
Great observation. Now Facebook is only worth TWELVE TIMES AS MUCH AS GANNETT.
Or, to put it in a way you MIGHT understand . . . when Gannett roars to $250 a share, it will have the same market cap as Facebook. IF Facebook stock remains at the same $26 it is now.
NEWSPAPER SOLD!!!! The Press of Atlantic City, a daily newspaper in New Jersey, was sold yesterday, Thursday, May 16, a source said. He said Gannett did not buy it. He said someone else bought it. He did not know who bought it. He said 100 people (all full timers) were laid off) after the newspaper announced its pending sale. For what it's worth, the new owner does not plan more layoffs. Man!!! Is he in for the shock of his life!!! All new brooms always sweep clean!!!!!!!!!
On the Facebook comment -- FB has a market cap of $63 billion, compared to less than $5B for GCI.
Since raise that issue, genius, let me raise this:
Jim, has any lawyer looked into the appropriateness of having company stock as the 401K match? How many now current retirees or buyout/layoff victims watched their accounts tank as the stock dropped from $94 to $4 before it rebounded to its now supposed lofty levels? Where were the fiduciaries?
8:23 you are actually the real "genius" if you think someone would be stupid enough to leave their match in GCI stock when it started to tank. And while we are on it why do you experts fail to mention the paradigmm shifting impact of the WEB? The WEB changed the newspaper game forever.
8:23, asking Jim to analyze anything is a waste of time. I guess he has decided to start deleting that assessment, probably because it is 100 percent accurate, and it hurts his feelings.
Lawyer’s need not be engaged 8:23 PM as 401K’s are not legally mandated, hence companies can do what they like including not offering them at all.
And save the victim’s line as ALL employees had a chance to dump the stock match. In fact, many do it as soon as it’s placed in their accounts as a matter of practice.
Again, you should be moving Gannett stock into other retirement funds every two weeks when you are paid. Having Gannett stock in your 401K is like having cancer in your drinking water. Nuff said.
11:37 PM -- No, that's not quite right. What you mean is, if your total real return after taxes and inflation exceeds the comparable return from an alternative investment over the same period entailing the same or lower risk, then and only then do you make money.
GCI shares are worth less than they were 20 years ago, while in that time the S&P advanced 250%. The shares are worth 73% less than they were just 10 years ago, while the S&P is up over 60%.
Hollis Towns announced yesterday at a staff meeting that the sister weeklies of the Asbury Park Press have been folded. They consisted of 11 zoned editions that covered from Berkeley to the south to New Egypt to the west and the Bayshore (Keansburg, Keyport) to the north. They were delivered for free in the mail to non-Press subscribers. Don't know when the final issues will be published. Some issues were down to eight pages in Middletown, a disgrace considering it's a prosperous area. Can anyone answer that question?? Score another foulup for the Press' advertising department. Good workers will lose their jobs because of the clowns in advertising. I also hear the Press will close its Freehold printing plant and outsource the printing...Can anyone confirm or deny that????
You're an idiot. It takes about 2 min. to get the address. And no, I am not going to do it for you. You can claim all you want this means I "don't know where it is." You'll still be wrong. And an idiot.
I was wrong. It takes less than 2 min. with a good Internet connection. My wireless is slow today, so I had to wait for a bit. You could massage your lobotomy scar while you wait if the same thing happens to you.
Jim, you need to do a better job of keeping the worthless stuff off the blog. Four years ago, I stopped coming here because there were too many people asking stupid questions and making crazy claims.
When it comes to journalism ethics, maybe I'm old-school, but I find it unseemly for a top Gannett news executive to publicly bash any corporation, including a potential advertiser, in social media, like this juvenile Facebook post:
Beryl Love I, Beryl Love, do hear by (sic) promise never to book a flight on American Airlines again. Ever. I don't care how fancy your new branding looks.
We, American Airlines, do hereby promise never to book an ad with USA Today, nor allow it in our terminals, again. Ever. We don’t care how you fancy your newfound balls
What a lame post. You guys never fail. Any new executive is crap in your eyes from day one. Please find another job and get out!!! Oh that's right no one else will hire you so you hate the company that pays you. Sorry I forgot
11:47 AM – If you can’t see the problem with Beryl’s post given his new role, then it is you who should thank Gannett for keeping you around as more ethically savvy companies wouldn’t, especially since you attack valid criticism via sophomoric diversions; i.e. “haters.”
BTW, this is from someone who worked with, and likes Beryl....though, not his public whining as it negatively impacts an organization who's worth is supposed to be built on non-biased reporting.
Such loathsome remarks to each other! What is wrong with you people?
Jim, difference of opinion is one thing but vile snideness is another. It's depressingly juvenile.
Sometimes there's good takes on this blog, sometimes not. This thread is one that is not, populated as it is by folks who seem to never have gotten out of junior high school.
I noticed that too. I believe it is only one person who probably works for Gannett. They always make condescending remarks and criticize Jim for not providing more information. Then the say this is boring no real news of layoffs. then they insult people and claim that they are the ones being insulted. Probably a person that drinks alone and needs help.
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
Note: Only a member of this blog may post a comment.

Enough with the memorials. This guy wasnt the Pope. Enough already.

DeleteWTF?
ReplyDeleteSo the stock price for Facebook and Gannett are now less than $5 apart in price per share! $5. Wow that must kill the haters
ReplyDeleteRidiculous comparison, comment.
Delete3:18 PM - LOL. Next you'll tell us that you can see the image of Al Neuharth in a toasted bagel.

And with that logic, you must write for USAT's Money section!
ReplyDelete3:30 a hater in action
DeleteNot a hater. Someone with an accurate take on the level of reportage in the USAT Money section. (And no, I'm not 3:30)

Here eye bee again. My stock is at $21.55 a share and I bought dem all at $1.85 each.

What is the future of those who worked for the weeklies? How are the Gannett-owned community weeklies doing?? C'mon, let's hear it!!!!!!!
DeleteIn Lansing they had them down to a 75-25 percent ad-to-news ratio. Not a lot of room for news.
DeleteNoticed the Desert Suns circulation in Palm Springs has increased over the past year if the numbers are to be believed.
ReplyDeleteThe distributor and the carriers deserve more money after seeing an increase in circulation.

Delete11:32, seriously? If you can't figure out where the office is without asking someone here, then you shouldn't bother applying.
