Competition ramping up local news coverage down in North Florida: http://tallahasseereports.com/ In response to the local rag's coverage vacuum on city/county meetings. The #1 radio talk show in the market just announced an exclusive partnership with them, not the paper or either of the local TV stations: http://www.wflafm.com/pages/morningshow.html
The spat there just turned another page. A statewide political blog just blasted their editor, calling him out of his league for ripping a former allegedly "unhappy" employee.
Never seen so many news gathering entities come out against an editor like this. I have to wonder, when nearly every ex-employee is unhappy, who really is the problem?
Thumbs up to the all-local, all-the-time having as their centerpiece A-1 stories on consecutive days an AP story and a USA Today story. I guess they were too busy shooting videos to actually write something.
Stoney LaDouche, an empty newsroom and a empty parking lot and what is left of a great media organIzation turns its lonely eyes to you. They've taken away the beach papers, the Salisbury paper, the Cherry Hill paper, the Burlington paper, the Staunton paper, and you've given them every reason to do so.
How much longer until Dickey Boy makes the ultimate sacrifice -admitting that giving a friend a job he wasn't qualified for, does the right thing and he gives up on you?
With all of the newly announced "people taking a position outside the company," early retirements and layoffs watch for some old names to re-appear at a higher price. Des Moines is next for a house cleaning, then bringing in old timers from around Gannett! SPP, MJ, Kimm Miller all heading out. Wurzer will be next! LH at her best chopping heads.
The Des Moines implosion is a direct result of The Wintrhop Group. They came in and stirred the pot, got everyone to talk bad about each other under the guise of anonymity, then released comments to all of the sale staff for everyone to read. Nobody trusts anyone there, and there are constant hr postings for multiple positions. Pretty soon we won't have to worry about overcrowding in our "new and modern" space.
The Enquirer's package on heroin could have been a dramatic, emotional piece. There were plenty of statistics and charts, but no emotion. None. The piece comes across as if it was written by an accountant - a dry report. Jack Webb would be proud: "Just the facts madam."
Maybe I'm stupid, but I honestly puzzled over the headlines, too. "Heroin: Prescription for pain" and "If you've ever been in pain, you should care about heroin." I thought heroin was being prescribed as a new pain med!! Once I realized what it was really about, I leafed through the four pages inside and skimmed the headlines. But nothing pulled me into actually reading much of it. Not that compelling at all.
What is the "Des Moines disaster"? I'm in Des Moines. Today it was announced we're losing our main online person to Arizona...moving into a place way too small to accommodate current staff...horrific morale and people just "giving up" because they are so frustrated....tons of missed news with a focus on "video."
Richard was a good man to work for. Gannett shuffled him around Wisconsin in a dizzying fashion. How he managed to stay in the hellhole that is Fond du Lac is beyond me. Good luck in pursuing your other interests, Richard.
Clearly you’re not from Wisconsin. Richard and Kevin were outstanding leaders and honestly have had the same staff for some time – so, didn’t lose any minions as you state. They probably left because their boss didn’t know when how to run the state.
This is 10:11 a.m. I am from Wisconsin, and I worked for one of the men I mentioned in that message. I remember needing him to guide us through a night of huge technical failures, and he didn't even answer his phone. It was one of the worst nights of my life. I'd like to elaborate on the topic, but I have to get ready for my new job (which I like very much).
What's up is that Wisconsin is being run by an insecure woman who is in over her head...who reports to a power hungry, out of touch woman in Des Moines.
Although she may be over her head, I don't think her being a women has anything to do with her insecurity, I'm sure her insincerity was developed long before her sexuality.
isn't it odd the headline story on AZ Central the web for the Arizona Republic is about transgender folks getting to use the restroom of their choice. that what you get with a Gay running the newsroom !
8:31 PM, keep up with the news much? One of the hottest topics in the United States right now is a bill an Arizona state lawmaker introduced that would make it illegal for someone to use the restroom of the gender that's not on his/her birth certificate. Gay or straight, whoever's running the newsroom would be an idiot to ignore an issue drawing national attention.
How many publishers does Gannett need right now? I can't keep track. Don't they understand that the forecasts are not realistic and are running good people off? We are managing the decline of print and a conversion to digital that just isn't going to follow a forecast. A bonus tied to these unrealistic goals is demoralizing.
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

3volution !:)

ReplyDeleteWhy in heck do journalists think anybody gives a rip about THEIR emotions, opinions and biases?
DeleteMaybe if they stuck to "just the facts," the public would have somerespect for the profession.

ReplyDeleteBut this isn't a "disaster." It's status quo.
Add Des Moines to the downward spiral. All the rest of u have been living with this for two years due to constant reorgs.
DeleteRichard Roesgen (General Manager/Executive Editor of Fond du Lac Reporter) resigns effective April 1 to pursue other interests.
ReplyDeleteI hope he gets a job as a Publisher with a decent company. He was a fair boss, hard worker and paid attention to detail.

ReplyDeleteRichard Roesgen and Kevin Corrado are leaving because they no longer have minions to do their work for them. Good riddance!
