Have to give them some props: The stock is up 48% the past 12 months, better than the competition and the S&P 500. Callaway and Kramer were good hires.
That said, it was a beaten-up cyclical stock, one that should have rallied as the economy improved. And it's still well below its $90 peak, which is even worse than the Nasdaq in percentage terms.
Gannett brass will take credit for a cylical rally, and will indeed line their pockets handsomely -- all while wringing their hands about the hard choices they had to make, and slashing pay and benefits across the board. This is a company that loathes the people who create its product, nor does it care about the quality of the product it creates or the customers who consume it. That's not a great business model.
If a Gannett publisher is board Chairman of a large health care provider, then shouldn’t that paper disclose that relationship in its current coverage of that entity’s dispute with a major insurer that by that papers' own account could affect more than 500,000 people?
Anthem, UC Health dispute could affect thousands locally
The publisher in question is Margaret Buchanan who only last Fall said that “the credibility that is so important to our news team’s work is my highest priority.”
The best wishes was meant sincerely. 27-some years is a long time for one company. The people I've come in contact with who work there are a good bunch.
Press-Gazette Media President and Publisher Kevin Corrado announced today that he is leaving his position to become president and publisher of New England Newspapers Inc., in Pittsfield, Mass.
Genia Lovett, vice president of the Midwest Region for the Gannett Co., Inc., said Mike Seeber will serve as interim president and publisher in Green Bay as a nationwide search for a permanent replacement takes place. Seeber is currently vice president of finance for the Gannett Wisconsin Media group.
It's always a "nationwide" search. I realize that employers want to make job openings sound very, very important. But, honestly, when was the last time a Gannett site said it would only consider applicants from the immediate area?
A satisfying morning for me and I'm happy to hand in my resignation. Got what I expected from my manager: "Whatever. Wish I could get out of here too."
There is a much more productive, healthier, challenging, exciting career life outside of Gannett's cells.
I overcame being stuck in Gannett's dead-end for 14 years (four different interviewers knew what I had gone through).
And I'm over 50.
Thanks to Gannett for financing my job hunt. I deserved every penny. Bye bye.
Congrats to 12:42 and good luck! Forget 1:58, just jealous and wishing he had the good sense that you have. You have to feel sorry for the type that believes Gannett is the best employer in the land and that every corporation treats employees like disposable trash.
Conrats and best luck to you going forward. I did same. After being dumped on by the Gannett suits, I enjoyed taking my salary and work time to job hunt...on their dime.
Congratulations, 12:42: I too found a new job on Gannett's dime. I actually made $$ on their dime by consulting while on furlough. Never lost a penny that year. Best of luck to you.
Have revenue numbers and profit margins gone up on the print side? No. Prospering corporations see yearly profits going up by 8%, not down by 7 or 8%. Stock prices reflect what someone will gamble on, not the direction the company is going. You It's not though the stock price has continued to soar over months of time.So get over it.
You what the top SPORTS headline is on USATODAY.com? Kate Upton considers prom invitation.
There's another hard-hitting sports story: "Hooters girl nearly trampled by Yankees." You can't make this stuff up.
It's laughable what Beusse, Morgan & the rest of the new geniuses have done to SPORTS. They've dragged it into the gutter of desperate Bleacher Report garbage-feeding and simpering TMZ-style headlines.
Nice job guys. I noticed when Beusse was bragging about the supposed great job he's done to the gullible twits at Sports Business Journal, he forgot to mention anything about quality.
Neither he nor SBJ mentioned Joe Posnanski leaving. There's some hard-hitting reporting for you. I'm sure the WSJ, NYT and Washington Post are laughing their butts off.
This comes from the top...With circ. numbers falling like boulders over a cliff, several small daily paers will soon go to the Detroit model to some degree and publish at most 4 days per week. Look for the memo within the week. I am back, Jim
Stock prices don't necessarily mean a product is improving or that the work environment is more efficient and invigorating for employees. Stock prices are what they are. The ultimate success of any business has to do with the core principles. And in that way, Gannett and USA Today continue to trend downward. I guess as long as the country continues in the same direction, as education plummets, Gannett and USA Today will be fine in catering to utter morons.
I agree with 3:19 PM. There's so much dumbed-down stuff at least in our local Gannett paper -- "local" of course being a nauseatingly ironic use of the word.
You hit it on the head.Low information readers believe that what they read must be the truth and if it's in the newspaper it must all there is to know.
USA Today links at bottom of story are worth looking at. One today: Hollywood's Hottest Racks. Link is to Men's Fitness article. They weren't talking about gun racks or hat racks.
Kramer launched a "nationwide search" for an editor and we wound up with the attention-deficit challenged, never-in-the-newsroom Dave Callaway, his longtime pal at Marketwatch. Now they want to make over USA Today as market watch, but nobody works on real time deadline, the place gets dumbed down every day with silly ideas and stories by people who know little to nothing about what they are writing about, and stupid directive after directive. The disconnect between reality and fantasy has never been wider. If I was eligible to take the buyout, I would be out of here in a nanosecond.
So instead you stay and make everyone around you miserable. I'm begging you please get another job. Someone must be looking for a talented, positive pro like you
Under their direction, we get a site filled with mindless, tell-you-nothing videos. The duo has promised Ms. Martore 1 million video views a year. But here's the question: how many of those views were until the end? Darn few, I'll bet. In fact, I bet very few readers/viewers/clickers sit through the ad pre-roll. I also bet the advertisers don't get that information.
9:26 nails it with this: "This is a company that loathes the people who create its product, nor does it care about the quality of the product it creates or the customers who consume it. That's not a great business model."
Fond du Lac Reporter this past Sunday ... same obit runs side-by-side. Only difference? A picture of a female with the version in columns 1 and 2. Picture of a male with the version that was in columns 3 and 4.
And nobody noticed that anywhere along the line?
Sweet honey boo boo...who wants to pay for that kind of quality except for those who find more humor in the repeated ridiculous mistakes than one would find in the comic section?
Callaway is just collecting coin.,Kramer is in it for the ego, the King that is above it all. These guys were actual journalists at some point in their careers. Why don't they start acting like one, or at least hire some competent ones to run the place and elevate the quality of this jolie of an operation? Getting younger by shedding veterans makes no sense if the wrong veterans and kids are left to produce.
9:24 must be a true believer good luck with that. These guys want nothing to do with you unless you are young and look like a model. It's very creepy being an older woman and see this go on.
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
Note: Only a member of this blog may post a comment.
Any day now, Corporate is going to disclose what it paid CEO Gracia Martore and the rest of the very top brass last year.
ReplyDeleteAnd they deserve every penny! Great job during difficult times.
ReplyDeleteStinging sarcasm, and so early in the AM.

what is going on in Green Bay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you tell us?
DeleteGB Press Gazette publisher & Pres Kevin Corrado has resigned. Finance person Mike Seeber is interim leader.

Green Bay and Gannett are losing one of the good ones. Kevin Corrado was friendly, candid, honest and accessible. He understood digital, too.
DeleteVery sad day. Gannett lost a good one. How do they let someome like KC get away?
DeleteI am serious. They have led us through some very bad times. We are back on track.
ReplyDeleteThey have led themselves through to line their own pockets.
Delete12:35: I will agree with you if there are absolutely no furloughs this year, and only then.

You are right - I just checked it out - looks like a couple with the same last name died in an auto accident - 2 different people.
