If you don't like working for Gannett then get out. It's that simple. Leave. or keep posting lies and bs on here and we'll make it easier for you to leave. We're all getting sick of this constant bitching.
It shouldn't be hard right. Then again, if the large group you would like all to beleive you represent is unhappy with what goes on here, then the simple solution is to not frequent this site.
8 AM, who's "we"? If you're in a position of authority, maybe you should heed the sentiment of your work force and realize that something is seriously wrong with the way the company is being run.
I didn't like working for Gannett. So, I left. The outcome? 25% increase in salary. Not the stress of working for incompetent management. Not having to worry about more furloughs and crap like that. Shall I keep going...
Then why are you here, 8:00 a.m.? There is much to bitch about at Gannett. And "getting out" is not an option at this time for everyone. To make it sound that easy is actually fairly ignorant or arrogant or both.
This is a healthy forum for people to share legitimate complaints about a company that has practiced some of the worst managerial ethics of any corporation in any field.
If you don't believe in the freedom folks have to air their differences of opinion (not lies), then perhaps you're in the wrong line of work. After all, this is a media/journalism company. Perhaps you would be better suited in a profession where people fall into line and don't question authority.
Do any Gannett journalists have qualms about whoring themselves on social media? I don't mean sending tweets about events, but the barrage of 'read my story' 'watch my video' 'look at my pictures' posts. It seems as if they've been asked to take over the marketing and sales role. Not only do they write the news, now they hawk the news on the virtual streetcorner. I'm not meaning to criticize, but I wonder if this is just part of the bargain or has the nature of jouranalism changed?
Since when do you speak for all Gannett workers. Pack up your desk and get the f out if you hate it so much. Management is doing their f-ing best. You don't think they are then you are a fool.
Great leadership is not determined by good times. Great leadership is always determined by chaotic times. It is the oxymoron, if you please of life that our greatest leaders emerge in times of total chaos and confusion. Our weakest, impotent, and incompetent leaders emerge in times of comfort.
Your equation seems to disallow another result being equally possible. Chaotic times under leaders who think themselves great and yet pretty much have no clue.
Germany, if one will accept this example, was fairly chaotic in the 30's. Look what happened to it. Great leadership? Nope. Total disaster.
Gannett and its great leaders can expect a similar demise in the marketplace.
Look no further than the practice of TPP to see how lost this company has become. Snatching bare bones money from people at a time they need it most is practically evil. And meanwhile, carpetbagger execs walk away with hundreds of thousands in stock options.
Additionally, the company then burdens -- as a requirement in order to receive TPP -- the state in which Gannett operates, that state's often insolvent and already subsidized by the federal government, their unemployment programs.
All the time I worked for Gannett, it was clear that there would be a severance package in full in the event of any layoff.
Only when the layoffs came did Gannett suddenly whistle another tune.
These people at the helm are unprofessional, unethical and now typical of all things Gannett.
To be sure, there are quite a few long-timers at Gannett papers who are more than happy to hunker down below their desks, collect their steady paychecks and stay on in spite of the constant threat of layoffs. These are the people who don't have the skills to move up to a better employer. These underachievers actually overachieved by landing a Gannett job with good pay and benefits. It's not that they don't or won't leave, it's that they can't. As long as they've survived as many downsizings as they have, they'd might as well try to hang on a while longer. Most are in their 50s, but others are in their 40s, with some known barnacles in their 30s. Somehow, they have managed to dodge all the layoffs and stay and stay. Quite a coup on their part, actually, collecting their fat salaries and benefits for doing the bare minimum and not uttering the slightest objection to vacillating corporate initiatives. Every day they have a job is another quiet battle won over Gannett. Gannett would like to throw them overboard all at once, but can't. It tries to make work as miserable as possible to drive them off, but these people have no options so they continue to show up as daily reminders of the limits of Gannett's power.
My site has some "barnacles" in their 20s. No work ethic, combined with little oversight and accountability, creates a culture of getting by with minimum effort.
My site chose to keep the 20 somethings that chose to listen to Pandora and Facebook all day while I did all work. Now the paper looks like a 3rd grader put it together.
A former VP in HR, J. Berrios, retired a few years ago. No college degree, but lots of charisma. Of course at Gannett, this got him paid well, tenure, being a so-called 'diversity' guru, etc. before helping to leave the place worse off than he and that group found it.
But no college degree, even in his day, may not have been qualified at another big company. Exhibit A of what 11:10 is getting at.
Why are you asking here? Looking for more lies and accusations? That's all you're going to find on this worthless blog. Get off your ass and ask your management team.
Folks, Age has got nothing to do with it. I'm in my 50's and still work my ass off. Friend of mine in the same office is the same and works even harder. At the same time, I work with a couple of people in their 30's who are lazier than spit. One gentleman in particular is absolutely maddening to work with.
The so-called younger generation you reference don't have the work ethic we oldtimers have. They live for the moment, have a completely different philosophy. Sad.
Can anyone tell me if the Gannett Benifits Site is run by an outside company for Gannett or is it company run??...I thought an outside company (Hewitt came to mind) took care of it, but can't seem to find another company mentioned on the site...Thanks if anyone can help.
I accidentally removed 9:35's comment, which was: "I see you are not honoring the Best of Gannett winners because that might be -- gasp -- something positive!"
My response: Your comment would have been more persuasive if you'd included a link to the press release announcing the awards.
(That release, by the way, wasn't posted to Corporate's home page, which suggests the importance placed on the awards by the company itself.)
It's a shame what's happened to basic reporting at my site. I guess everyone is too busy setting up their I-phones instead of performing basic reporting tasks. For shame!!! For shame!!! For shame!!!!
another fine reporting job by the arizona republic. story on AZ Central web about freeway accident (which i observed passing the other direction). the story says 4 vehicles, the no audio video show 3 vehicles involved. trust me there were only 3 vehicles involved. surprised they even had the right freeway where it occurred.
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

ReplyDeleteGannett workers that hate their jobs, hate the workload, can't stand their manager and dread going to work everyday, whore themselves on a daily basis.

Deletegood management has common sense, good logic and is FAIR ! there are no good managers left at Gannett !

DeleteYou totally just described me, 11:10
Delete12:16, that describes the people at my site. Only they are all veterans of 20-30 plus years and are just coasting.

-- you're, not your
-- How is this "new"?
Three errors in a pointless five-word response. That takes skill.
Also, no cap, no period.
