So did anyone call the police or anything to report seeing a UFO? No mention of that in the story. It's either really creative thinking or really stupid. My guess is management will think praise the reporter for really creative thinking. Readers will think this is the #*()%@* dumbest waste of space and my subscription rate was jacked up 25% for this?
Groupon: $7.97, ANOTHER 52-week low. Perhaps Gracia's plan is to buy it up with all the money saved by running/laying off all the skilled content creators with institutional knowledge?
Then again, maybe I could apply for the job of Vice President in charge of Useless Acquisitions?
If you've got the margin in a trading account, it's been a good month to short Gannett. You'd be up about $750 on a 1K share lot so far. And I expect more after next Monday's earnings announcement.
Gannett/USA Today, take note. People on some level are beginning to realize the lack of quality and integrity of your news products. And your failings as a news company -- your outright hatred of seasoned, ethical journalists as seen through massive layoffs and push outs -- will come back to haunt you.
Either get serious about reporting the news or perish.
Jim, this blog is going to shit. How about some news that every one already doesn't know. We would also like more stuff on The GPS side of things and less of the copy writers crying that they have to do acutaul work know Thank you, a daily reader, and Gannett employee
Yeah, that Post-Crescent story is the kind of dumb stuff you see on Facebook or on blogs. And, increasingly, on what passes for legitimate news outlets. If the cable news networks can brighten their newscasts with YouTube videos, what's wrong with this pap? The real question is will readers pay to subscribe to Gannett News Lite, or simply get their online entertainment elsewhere, for free ...
2:28 Abruptly? Boy, are you out of touch. He got his MBA this spring. (Graduated at the top of his class.) He's made no secret of the fact that he was working on the degree. You must be the only person who was surprised to hear he was leaving.
I thought that Post-Crescent UFO story was fine. Something light, something whimsical, something to smile about. Page views generated, too!
But no surprise that all the dour gloomy Gusses who frequent this bar would piss all over it. Things aren't great but too bad so many have lost a sense of humor.
It's not about "news" or "local". It's page views, impressions and clicks. NEWS is an expense. IMPRRESSIONS are revenue. Get it? I am you future. - but that's what it is...
I came across an interesting interview with Karen Crotchfelt from Nov, 2010 while she was in Phoenix-http://www.phoenixchamber.com/news/newsletter/businesswise/20101130/exec
Here's an interesting quote that's troubling. I haven't worked in the industry for almost 4 years but when was the last time anybody felt their future was bright? "Q. If you could change one thing about the news business what would it be? A. How we beat up on ourselves. We need to give ourselves a break sometimes and see how bright our future is."
Appears the dream team of Craig Moon, former USA Today Publisher, and Don Stinson, former VP of Ad Sales at Gannett, has split up? no longer? According to Linked-in site, Stinson was for 5 months the "GM" for Craig Moon's Newsman LLC, the small weekly newspapers that were reportedly purchased by Moon and Stinson. Linked in profile shows Stinson now VP for a sports marketing company in Florida, no longer linked with Craig Moon and the "Newsman LLC newspapers." Anybody know what happened to the Don Stinson Craig Moon professional partnership? only 5 months. and Stinson listed as GM. Seems short-lived. Looking at Stinson's resume like Stinson's career has been less than impressive since he dearly departed Gannett "to pursue other opportunities."
I had to laugh when I heard that one of your contributors had recently taken the time to write something about me. All I could think was that it must have been an exceptionally slow news day.
The writer wanted to know "what happened to the Don Stinson-Craig Moon professional partnership" and I thought I'd give him the answer: after a very worrisome incident involving my elderly parents, I decided that I needed to move from North Carolina to Florida to be near them. Craig was very supportive and I continue to do some work for him and the newspapers from my home in Tampa Bay.
As for the writer's comments about my career, I'm working on the East-West Shrine Game, a college all-star/NFL showcase that benefits the 22 Shriner's Children's Hospitals across the country. The game, which has been played every year since 1925, will be televised on the NFL Network on Saturday, January 19, 2013.
The hospitals do amazing work, including treating burns, spinal cord injuries, orthopaedic conditions and cleft lip and palate for children up to age 18, regardless of their ability to pay.
I hope your readers will visit the website (www.shrinegame.com), watch the game in January and make a contribution to this very worthy cause.
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

ReplyDeleteIs the Deal Chicken dead? It's been taken off Salem's home page bar.
ReplyDeletegood month to short? Stock is up $2.00 since June 11. That would be a $2,000 loss.
ReplyDeleteOr, just short "Govt. Motors" (GM).

Why did lifelong Gannett Golden Boy Joe McDonald abruptly resign his ME position at The Journal News?

Big departure in Westchester, he found a lifeboat and saved himself from the sinking.
ReplyDeleteAmen, 2:02.
ReplyDeleteDown goes the stock again. Kramer nor Deal Chicken are doing the trick. So what's left, Gracia?
ReplyDelete2:28 re: JM. Because he could. He had an opportunity to jump and he took it. Who wouldn't?
