If you ask gannett benefits what is going to be done with our medical information that we are required to submit, they will tell you it will be given to a private company. Just imagine what a private company (subcontractor) is going to do with it. Privacy safeguards? Ha!
Why doesn't Gannett just sell or close the dead weight locations ? The smaller publications could be brought back to life by truly local,caring and efficient buyers and or start up ownership..Newspapers are not dead at the real and basic local level.Newspaper corporations are dying because huge profits are the number one and only agenda.The days of the cash cow in advertising may be gone ,but there is a need for local news for small towns.News that won't be found on the internet or TV,and affordable print advertising to go with it. If Gannett got out of these small locations and focused on the true corporate major markets,they would increase cash reserves and stop the drain of supporting in the red sites.
I find it hard to believe that Deal Chicken's revenues are down by that much since last year when the site's have hired multiple sales reps and extended every deal to run for 7 days.They are also flying all of the sales reps to corporate for 2 days of training and strategy. It cant be dead yet.
The multi-media sales people with the relationships with large accounts do not present DealChicken as an advertising solution. Corporate was banking on the reps with relationships to go out and help get deals. Instead, they put the fate of the "start up" to reps with little sales experience and no Rolodex to telemarket/cold canvas for deals. If management made it a point, not an option, to sell DealChicken maybe it wouldn't be in such trouble.

By contrast, Gannett's total employee count across ALL Arizona properties (newspapers in Phoenix and Tucson, TV, specialty printing and mailing) is 2207.
DealChicken is already DOA. No revenue, no qualified sales people, no plan, no marketing, no future.
There's not much revenue to be found in recycled massage offers and 3 tires for the price of 2 posted over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and...
8:29...you're right. People, old AND young, would still buy a paper if it was relevent, covered stories from the middle instead of telling people how to think, had the number of stories in it that it had 3-4 years ago, and cared whether they used the right words..never ind spell them right.
No newspapers equal an uninformed public which equals a public ripe for taking over.
Once the flying car is perfected, tire manufacturing will see a downturn. Older people will help sustain that sector until they die. The older folks will not be able to accept that cars are going away, but they will. Newspapers have about 15-20 years left. The next 5 years will see ongoing reduction in days of the week and paper size. Printing costs HAVE to be reduced or it'll be the entire workforce. Advertising HAS to double or triple digital sales or we won't get but 5 more years. In five years, papers will be closing left and right on the road to only a few majors left in 15 years.
Oh I so agree 8.29, we are a profitable centre here in the UK but anything we make is eaten up by Gannett and we see no rewards, no pay review, no investment in the business, we have a loyal local readership and it would be crime to lose our local paper.
