Hi Tweeps! #GannettCareers apologizes for being socially dead for the past month...do you forgive us? *crosses fingers*
I am totally unimpressed by usatoday.com's understated coverage of today's Supreme Court decision on health care reform. Compared with the other major news websites, USAT once again seems to have displayed a poor sense of news judgment and uninspired design.
Did this story sneak up on USAT? I mean what is going on in that newsroom? It just gets worse by the year there. No sense of urgency or proportion on major breaking news stories. Whomever is running the online operation, well, you certainly leave a lot to be desired. Don't know why anyone would turn to usatoday.com for big news anymore. This site has failed time and time again to be first with news and to play it correctly.
And I haven't even touched on the inaccuracies that appear on this website regularly.
The site is run mostly by non journos and inexperienced kids. What do you expect? Sadly, oversight by newsroom managers is extremely lax and they defer to those running digital..Insane
Now that the Courier-Journal is behind a paywall, Louisville TV stations are aggressive in going after the Gannett daily's audience. Net NewsCheck covers as much in a market profile published today.
One telling fact: The Courier-Journal apps keep all content behind the paywall.
Wonder how long it will take advertisers to realize that Gannett local papers have cut single copy and the circulation numbers don't actually reflect sales.
I think Joan Biskupic, who covered Supreme Court for USAT, left in spring, but even then the brains should have known like everyone else a major decision would come out this a.m. It looks like they were unprepared, compared with other newspaper sites, Huff Post, left and right action groups and everyone else. Legal and health and political writers should have all been on alert. Looks like another telling sign of the demise of the flagship.
Why are all the suits back slapping and getting such a hard on about the stock "sky rocketing"? You've got a long way to go (get your short term memories back) to get Gannett back to $95.
During the phone conference between South Group and its IT departments, it was made clear the reason why they are moving to consolidate the IT departments under one big umbrella. Apparently years of service in the various IT departments runs high, and because of that the early retirement packages have left gaping holes in staffing. Instead of hiring new blood (which was allowed under the those terms) the focus is on patching the holes with staffers from other sites. Why wouldn't they want to hire new/younger staff and prepare for future retirements, which isn't that far off for some still left? This is a band aid solution at best, and the way it was described it will take a lot of electronic paperwork, subtracting from the available time to do actual work. This would have been an excellent idea about 8 years ago when we had the staff to cover a help desk, which would have made the transition much smoother. As it stands, I don't see a smooth transition and I feel for those people we service. SOP will shift to a ticket system, and there will be no more calling your IT department for help, no more direct emails and no more hailing our name when you see us. There will be training for our customers on the ticket system during the transition period, but when we go "live" you are on your own.
Anyone familiar with Newsgate and the GCI ticket system may want to share their experience with others not familiar with it.
Jim is spot on with this: "USAT didn't need (Joan) Biskupic to know that. However, she's missed for her deeper knowledge of this court's inner politics." With 15,000 journalists laid off (not just Gannett) in the last couple of years, context and institutional knowledge was tossed out with them.
Unlike the very real anguish and concern from colleagues when USATODAY talent have been fired or have left, there was not a peep when Jim Hopkins jumped to take his buyout years ago.
Instead we all shrugged.
The man who nobody misses and few even remember, one of US TODaY's true non-impact players, now returns to criticize what he never could do to begin with.
HR tweeting? Please don't distract from not helping employees, not recruiting, not answering voicemails, not picking up or returning calls, not ever responding to the most basic email, not being available or in the office. But, that's just Reno.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

No.

ReplyDelete12:19? What are you talking about?
ReplyDeleteUSA TODAY got health care right (CNN, NPR, Fox and many others didn't), and we have good display up.
This blog is just ridiculous sometimes.
12:19 Can you be more specific?
ReplyDeleteI agree. USA Today has Obama's speech up live, Romney's reaction, a timeline, reaction, analysis and more.
ReplyDeletePlus they got the story right!

Talk to the great and talented lee horwich, who planned the coverage.
DeleteTry this exercise: Critique USAT's coverage using Publisher Larry Kramer's new yardstick. For example, how prominent is USAT's "voice" on this story?
ReplyDelete1:17 That's just silly. USAT knew this was coming. Hell, I was sitting at my computer at 10 a.m. ET, knowing it was about to be released.
ReplyDeleteUSAT didn't need Biskupic to know that. However, she's missed for her deeper knowledge of this court's inner politics.

ReplyDeleteThis is in deputy content editor Lee Horvich, no. 2 in the newsroom.
DeleteThe new paywall breaks the sites' RSS feeds? Has that happened everywhere or is this a first-day glitch with the paywall site?
ReplyDelete3:30 - our hotels programs will go through the roof! If you don't buy a paper, we can fine you!
ReplyDeleteAn informed citizenry is the basis for a healthy republic, after all. It is in all our best interests.

ReplyDeleteIf something were to happen to Martore, who would be next in line to take the reins?
ReplyDeleteAnd don't get your panties in a wad, SVP Girls. No threat. Just curious.

Captain Campbell to the rescue! Thank God we have him to save us.

I would like to see what Biskupic turned out for Reuters. Can you post, Jim?
ReplyDeleteWhy was 3:30 censored (and AFTER being moderated!)?
