... Is Jerry Mitchell still there? I would hope that a guy that talented and respected would have found a better place to be. But, then again, it's not like there are tons of options there in Jackson. (No offense to locals.)
Hey Jim: The new 'comment verification' standard here requires TWO words (of varying degree of readability) be typed in instead of the normal one. Is that something you initiated? Because it's annoying as could be. The second word is usually impossible to read too. Usually takes two or three attempts just to post something.
to 12:27 a.m. re Jerry Mitchell. Yes, he is still around, but remember he won a $500,000 foundation grant a year or so back to allow him to take time off and do his book, or whatever he wants. He is working on the book and posting stuff on a blog and surfaces every now and then with a civil rights era story gleaned from working on his own time. He is showing up less and less, however. Question: The new Clarion-Ledger executive editor carries the dual title of director of audience engagement and growth. What the hell is that? This bunch can double-speak worse than the government.
Well, leave it to a bunch of IT people to find a way to screw up something that was perfectly fine to begin with. Honestly ... the second word ... Can ANYONE make these things out? It's shrouded in some kind of incredibly fuzzy, incomprehensible typeface.
Having working with Tolly, I can say he's a "hands off" editor. He doesn't like to interact with the staff often and focuses his time on broad, steering principals rather than any sort of daily production.
He's a "change agent" in that he looks for big ideas. He says a paper needs to go from point A to point B but isn't concerned with each little turn to get there.
Not that I miss the intrigue and drama, but am I the only one who noticed that comments about Cherry Hill and Neptune and the rest of Jersey have completely stopped?
Wow. Florida Today Sunday draws were cut finally...however only half of what they needed to be. Now most carriers will only have 750-800 returns instead of 1100. I guess some is better than none but still too much waste. They still don't have a clue.
Oh, another IT person who gets all thin-skinned when a user indicates that they've created yet another unnecessary bottleneck. Why is it that 99 percent of IT people don't 'get it' that IT needs to design things for users, and not for other IT people?
Really, 4:35. Take a look at the words on the bottom of this page. Can you honestly begin to accurately interpret what the one word is that's obscured by the absolutely incomprehensible typeface? I didn't think so. How many tries did it take you to input the correct word? More than two? Three?
And that's considered an 'improvement'? What a joke.
on the "two words".....I agree it's difficult to read. Why a black background on one of them with black and white letters. Could be the reason there are very few comments today.
Really. The black background word is impossible to read 99 percent of the time. You're just guessing at letters there. Only an IT person could have thought this was a good idea.
Add me to the many who dislike Blogspot's new CAPTCHA challenge. There are several other "styles" with far-superior legibility.
And, yes -- it's an acronym, so (for those who care) it would be capitalized (CAPTCHA: "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart."
Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

FYI, the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss. just announced hiring a new EE:

Anyone know his management style?
ReplyDeletePardon me for being out of the loop here but ...

Gotta agree with a previous poster . . . the two-word authentication is a pain.
ReplyDeleteDo you REALLY have robo-bloggers trying to score front-row tickets to Lady Gaga on this site?

ReplyDelete12:36 Indeed, that's new. But it's not my doing: Google's Blogger developers made that decision.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry for the inconvenience. But spammed comments is an ongoing problem, unfortunately.

ReplyDelete1:01 PM, if it was perfectly fine, it wouldn't have been changed.
ReplyDeleteLeave it to a bunch of reporters to think they know everything.

Josh Resnik to the rescue! Oh, sorry, he has left the company...uh, Larry St. Cyr to the rescue!

All quiet on the comments front. Is the new captcha really that annoying?
ReplyDeleteC'mon cherry hill. Endeavor to persevere....
ReplyDeleteRerdon convinced?

ReplyDelete7:20, those people are probably hibernating for the winter. They were at the sub-human level.
ReplyDelete4:35, the argument that all change has to be good is a faulty one. Please think, then post. Get the order right.

7:20: Jersey has hit rock bottom. That's why.

ReplyDeleteFunny to hear non-IT people claiming to be experts in the underlying technology used by Google.
ReplyDeleteActually, we're all experts in the user interface. And if we say it sucks, it sucks.
ReplyDeleteAnd if we say it doesn't suck, it doesn't suck.
ReplyDeleteSee how that works?
4:26 you are correct. But it does suck.
ReplyDeleteOr, it doesn't suck.
