DeleteAs a true Gannett employee (or former in your case) we've all been looking for our own way out for years. I am happy for you to have finally found a way to severe the umbilical cord and free yourself of the carnage of a once powerful and proud industry corporation. Good luck and I will personally miss the insight and information I have been able to gain throughout the last few years in understanding what has happened to the company I truly wanted to work for until I retired. Now, like you and so many others, it's time to open the other door and exit stage left. I just can't wait until my door appears before me and I can turn the knob and enter a new way of life. DeleteYou have kept me informed in more ways than I could have thought, I was able to give you insider information for years, and I hope you find what you are looking for. I have, left the company a few months back and could not be happier. Things are better when you do not have to go into work and deal with fakes and phonies, Maybe some one else will start a new blog, maybe not..but its been great. Take care Jim, I will miss you insight

Thanks Jim for all your hard work and insight into the company. The blog was always a place to vent and to hear other people voice their opinion. I think we all know where this company is headed and the direction they are leaning toward. It's been great to hear the stories on this blog, good or bad and you will be missed by most. Good Luck in your future endeavors.

DeleteSad to read of the demise of Jim Hopkins' blog, but I am not surprised. It was indeed the only means by which to get any information regarding an employee's fate, no matter whether false or true. At least it was information! Something! Something that Gannett types would never provide. This blog — yes, with all its flaws and its successes — has provided a tremendous service on a scale utterly alien to Corporate. What? The unwashed clamor for any news?
ReplyDeleteHopkins has done a tremendous public service. Slammed, libeled and slandered, he didn't back off.
Remember what journalism used to represent?
Hopkins' blog helped out so many in processing a really bad situation. It was a life line in my case when my job disappeared, and I was no "deadwood."
But Hopkins is right in ending the blog. The point of it is over. Gannett is essentially dead and buried, buncha Zombies at its helm.
At that, well wishes you to, sir, Jim. The blog was remarkable.

Jim, all my very best to you and thanks for the countless hours you've devoted to the blog these past 6 years. Although I voluntarily left Gannett in 2012 to start my own business, it was still difficult to walk away from a 35 year career and all the close friendships I had made. You're blog was like therapy for me. It was healing knowing hundreds, nah thousands of former Gannett staffers were experiencing the same emotions, whether their separations were voluntary or forced. Your blog was community for me and I will always be grateful to you for that. Wishing you and your partner the very brightest future

You're doing something we look forward to doing, finding that next opportunity when the job piece of the economy finally recovers and we can say Adios Mother ******* to Gannett.Thanks for holding the bastards accountable for some of there atrocities. The best revenge is living well and succeeding and I wish you both.

DeleteWishing you all the best Jim. Not only was your coverage of Gannett remarkable, but if not for you, no one would be paying attention to the declining fortunes of the Newseum and Freedom Forum. Hope the Washington Post keeps tabs on its own, instead of doing a story only after you dug through the information.

ReplyDeleteIf I were you, I would have kept this decision secret. Then I would have contacted Gannett HQ with an offer to sell them this blog for $750,000. They would have talked you down to $500,000 and laughed about the great deal they got.
