  2. to 5-8 1:13....There's only 2 things Gannett needs to do is go back to the better, locally produced product and lower the price of daily and Sunday so people can afford it. And oh by the way...where does "counting returns" come from in upping circulation? Don't know about anywhere else but the S/C carriers here are already treated like 10 year olds with all they have to do and sign.

Funny (not) how the front office people always try to shift at least partial blame, if not all, on the carriers. Typical.

Gannett has started a catfight in Buffalo. Last week WGRZ anchorwoman Maryalice Demler did an on-camera commentary about openly gay basketball player Jason Collins. Buffalo News columnist Alan Pergament called her out for doing something "obvious and unnecessary". She fired back by saying she was "a 21st century news anchor". His reply?

"I haven't laughed out loud so much about local TV news since watching 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy'."

You can watch everything unfold courtesy of TV Spy.

  4. Post-Crescent website now up to 49 people watching the test pattern while waiting for a major announcement in downtown Appleton by musician Corey Chisel.

    1. People are probably riveted to the top two breaking stories in the Oshkosh Northwestern:
"Oshkosh man continues three-week search for his lost dog" and "Spring reveals mess of winter's litter, lost items."
Trust me, this is not a joke.

  5. 12:02 apparently hasn't figured out that until an event actually is live, it can't be shown live.
Or how to spell Cory Chisel (same with 2:05 p.m.).
There were more than 500 viewers when I watched, and about 150 in person at the event.

    1. No, I was just amused by the number of people queued up watching the "test pattern" well prior to the start of the announcement.

Now go back to studying your metrics so you can properly determine what should and should not be on the website (ie more bartender cleavage photos and less news).

    2. That in a city of 73,000. With a huge population in surrounding towns. Pretty good metrics, eh? Not.

    3. Am I the only one amazed that 9:23 AM is dismissive of 'metrics' as if what readers want isn't worthy of consideration? Or that 9:23 AM doesn't understand that people queued up to watch live coverage on a newspaper website shows how far 'newspapers' have come?
And 10 AM clearly doesn't get it. Those are live readers. Like at that exact moment. Doesn't include all the people who will watch or read when it's not live. If you had any knowledge of broadcast, you'd understand those numbers, what it says about the development of what used to be print-only companies and what that bodes for the future of pure broadcast.
You know what the funny thing about these critics is? The ones like 9:23 AM who keep talking about 'news' almost never are the ones who make it happen unless dragged along kicking and screaming.

  6. Test patterns are quite popular with Wisconsinites. They're eerily calming — better than a video fireplace. A 24/7 live stream test pattern would really drive those ratings.

    1. Just because it showed people logged in doesn't mean they were actually watching it. They could be doing other things while listening for the start.

    2. Lost in all the bickering is the news that Chisel intends to inspire a south-by-southwest type music venue this summer in Appleton. Just attempting something like that in a cultural wasteland like Appleton is news.

    3. In the cultural wasteland of Appleton, we at least know it's SXSW, or South by Southwest if you want to go old school.

    4. Let's hope everyone in Appleton isn't an asshole like 11:27, culture or no culture.

  7. Wisconsin's Sheboygan Press is the latest Gannett site to sell its downtown building as part of a digital-driven downsizing.

“We are committed to staying in Sheboygan,” General Manager Nhia Yang said. “Regardless of our locale, we will continue to pursue and produce great journalism for our readers, deliver terrific marketing solutions for our clients and diligently work to serve the greater good of our community.”

    1. From that story:

Sheboygan Press Media is part of Gannett Wisconsin Media, and owned by Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI), an international media and marketing solutions company that informs and engages more than 100 million people every month through its powerful network of broadcast, digital, mobile and publishing properties.

Since when is Gannett an international media company? Have the press releases always said that, or is it a newer trend?

    2. Since 1999. Do please try to keep up.

      Delete
    3. Or since 1984, if you count the USA TODAY international edition.

      Delete
    4. I would go with at least 1984. However, didn't USAT circulate in Canada before Europe?

Also worth noting: In 1971, Gannett bought the Pacific Daily News in Guam -- although, as a U.S. territory, that's not quite international.

Didn"t Al try to buy the "Time of India" at one time? That would certainly be international newspaper.

    6. Here's another international connection: Gannett bought Newsquest in 1999. That's a U.K. chain of dailies, magazines and trade publications, numbering about 200 in all. I believe it publishes 160 newspapers.

  9. Murcko and Banikarim have been bragging about the "positive" results from the Gannett upfronts. But I'll be damned if I can see the advertising needle moving anywhere but downward.

    3. Calling someone a “hater” @6:37 PM because they dared asked for supporting data to backup Murcko and Banikarim’s remarks says far more about your motivations. Failing to provide supporting detail yourself even more as you write as they're being straigh up.

      Funny.

Frankly 4:30, you’re hysterical as you just shot down your post.

  10. Bottom line here is that Gannett is a stock driven company. As long as the newly voted in board( Same Old Board) have their stock options, all is good. When the market makes it's corrections, the panic will be back, about layoffs and buyouts. So far, so good!

  13. Can banikarim and murcko back up theor claims with some cold hard numbers?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Do you have any numbers? If so, let's see them. If not, it's time to open a can of STFU.

      Delete
    2. @2:58 – You do realize its Murcko and Banikarim who need to produce numbers as they’re allegedly the ones bragging that the upfronts delivered positive results.

If those claims are accurate, then they should have no trouble proving it, else to borrow you’re less than civil suggestion, they need to “STFU.”

      And, that’s the point.

      Delete
    3. In other words, 10:08, you have no numbers. Good to know.

Just to help you out: The person who started this topic made a claim but had no numbers. That's what I'm trying to ferret out.

But as always at Gannett Blog, people make claims, offer no facts, and then cry when people won't take their word for it.
