  1. Bad week ahead for some

  2. Issue of the month management must resolve immediately: Does GCI buy more software to get the glitches out of the Newsgate program (which I can easily see isn't really doing anything except screwing up the works), or do we go back to the old ways of doing things and try to patch things up with these hubs.
What a disaster. Was this one of Dickey's deals, struck in the bar of a clubhouse and sold as a cost-cutting miracle? Heads should roll over this, but I know they won't.

    Why do you care ?
You may or may not still be employed after the next round of layoffs,so how could it possible be important to you.Even if you are employed, will you make it past the next round.
Just freaken come to work if that is your choice, why give a damn about tomorrow's work or Gannett's problems. They sure as hell don't care about you !

  4. You are right. I don't really care and will accept whatever fate is coming down the Not a hell of a lot I can do about it.
But if the Hubs don't work as planned, and Newsgate is an impossible disaster, then they won't be able to do the layoffs, will they? That's fine with me, as well, as I don't really care if I work for GCI or work elsewhere.
I suspect (but do not know for sure) that corporate now clearly sees they cannot make the sort of cuts they wanted to make and continue to publish the community papers. If the community papers don't publish, then they don't get their salaries and they have to look for another job. That would be the best outcome I could ever possibily hope for.

  5. Good week ahead for some!

  6. How could anyone in Gannettland have a good week? Unless ,of course they have found a new job or some other way out.
Oh ,maybe they are set to retire or turn in their resignation.

  7. If it's any consolation, Newsgate is throwing an enormous wrench in the works at USA Today, too.

I also don't see how this system is ever going to work like they expected it to. It won't bring them the jobs reduction (and subsequent bonuses) they were clearly salivating over, that's for sure.

It's already taking us almost twice as long to do the jobs we were hired to do, let alone the dozen other jobs thrust upon each of us since the buyouts and layoffs chewed through staff.

  8. 9:43 AM, you are so silly. There is no relationship between anything that happens within the company and the GMC bonuses.

    Stop being such a crazy!

  9. What I liked about working at a newspaper pre-online: It was just like raising kids. The days were hectic but satisfying, and in the end, you'd put them to bed and gaze upon them fondly and decide you'd done a pretty good job but knew you could do even better tomorrow.

It's the same now -- only you also have snarling dog at your feet 24/7, threatening to tear you to bits if you don't throw a hunk of raw unedited meat down its drooling maw every time you turn around.

  10. John Kridelbaugh sounds like a great guy who got the raw end of the deal in Indy. It's also nice to see people stand up for someone on the blog. I guess it proves that if you are a good manager people realize it and say so on the blog. NOT every manager sucks. Unfortunately, top management got rid of the guy, which is very sad to hear.

I hope he lands on his feet soon and gets an even better job.

John sounds like one of the good people who were left and thrown out. Sad.

  13. The main problem with on line are the jr. Achievers running the show. Little experience to none in actual news gathering and writing. No perspective, either. But hey, they're cheap and eager!

  14. 6/13/2011 10:42 AM Wow, that is a vivid description. Loved it! You have a very creative mind and must be a professional writer.

  15. 1. Layoffs coming this week or next. Lists have been sent off for review.
    2. John K a good guy, deserved better.
    3. Gannett Local selling very little. Individual market budgets include revenue from Gannett Local so the s*^# is about to hit the fan.
    4. Deal Chicken already delayed.

  16. 1. Layoff rumor propagated by corporate to cover up something bigger.
    2. Digital getting ready for more shakeups.
    3. Big news coming today or tomorrow.
    4. Numbered lists sound really important but rarely have bearing on reality.

  17. John Kridelbaugh is a great guy. He was one of the rare Gannett managers who was extremely talented and treated his employees with the respect they deserved.

  18. 4:04: Then no wonder he didn't make it, huh?

  19. Looks like Deal Chicken flew into Wisconsin today.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 4:45: Yes. I always thought he was too good for Gannett.

  22. Sorry, I was warming up for the next couple weeks. 3rd quarter is approaching faster than a crack whore meeting up with her dealer.

  23. 5:14 I found the "coming soon" ad for Deal Chicken on the Appleton site, but is there any other evidence for Wisconsn getting it?

    ReplyDelete
  24. 6:18, I'm 5:14, here's what you get when you click on the "replay" button on the bottom right of the ad, which I did inadvertently, since I LOATHE the popup ads on our sites these days. It mentions Appleton, Central Wisconsin and Green Bay, for the Wisconsin sites.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 6:18 Yes, I agree with you about those annoying popup ads, but another problem is I couldn't figure out a way to link to the popup ad since it only pops up, so people just have to go to the site and see it for themelves.

  26. 7:32 Why are they being so furtive about this? They could announce it is coming so readers would be on alert to make local deals, and get free publicity.

  27. 8:00AM, Newgate is Mark Morneau's baby. Dickey is in the clear on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 7:39 Furtive: Probably because they fear the whole of their best performing retail sales staff will quit when they bring Deal Chicken online. Wisconsin used to be some of our most profitable papers.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Deal Chicken is also in Delaware, but nobody wants the job. Go figure. People don't want to work for Gannett anymore. They know how they treat their employees and are avoiding it like the plague.

  30. Bad life ahead for 7:10 and several others here. Look, these vague, unfounded predictions of doom are useless. Either provide the proof or go away.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @7:46 PM

It only became Morneau's baby after the fact. Community publishing made all of the initial decisions and then turned it over to IT for installation and system management. IT only acted in a consulting role early in the process.
