Cincy | This publisher's layoff letter rings hollow

"We work for our advertisers."

-- Cincinnati Enquirer Publisher Margaret Buchanan, in a letter to readers, posted yesterday afternoon as the Ohio paper was laying off as many as 101 employees. On June 4, Corporate named Buchanan "the top publisher in U.S. Community Publishing, receiving the division’s President’s Ring. Buchanan also received the division's Signet Award, given to 10-time President’s Ring winners."

Check out the comments. Readers aren't stupid. It seems they know the difference between news and fluff, and they want and need news.

Fuck Gannett.

You work for your readers first, nitwit. No readers = no advertisers.

2:36 p.m. you are spot on.

And so true, 2:45.

At what point will Gannett have to bill itself as a PR company rather than news? Is there some kind of standard or regulation there?

Wouldn't it be nice to work for a company that fire her for putting that advertiser stuff in writing? It's just plain unethical to think that, let alone send it to staff. What's the Cincy ethics policy look like, and does this memo from the publisher violate it?

If so, sounds like she's creating a hostile work environment to me.

To put that out in writing is pure stupidity. No wonder this nitwit got a Gannett ring.

2:57, she didn't just send it to staff, it was on their Web site for all the world to see! And comment on. The reader comments are priceless.

What a dumbass thing to do.

More like "we rip off our advertisers - just like we ripoff our readers"

Can't beleive she did this

Just speaking honestly and sans filter.

"We work for advertisers." (And President's Rings.)

After closing Gannett Blog in July 2009, I've begun experimenting with a possible relaunch, in conjunction with two, new related media blogs that I might start publishing after the New Year. As always, please keep your comments focused on Gannett and media-related subjects.
